Clear red flowers, with a deeper red in the centre, carried in a truss of about 16. Can be frosted in bud in cold areas, so position where it will be protected. The leaves are dark green, 'thick' and seem to be insect resistant. (September-October)

Deep pink flowers with an apricot flush in the centre. A compact, well covered plant growing to about 1.5m. (October)

Widely grown, Unique is easily recognised by the rounded, deep green, shiny leaves. The buds are pink and open the colour of thick cream with a pink and yellow flush. Prolific flowers in rounded trusses of about 14. A fairly slow growing plant it will reach 1.5m eventually and is best grown in a sunnier position as it can become drawn in shade. (September)

Pinkish-maroon, perhaps not the easiest colour to place in the garden, 'Unknown Warrior' flowers early, with a full truss of about 12. A strong growing plant to 1.5m it can require some shaping when young, especially if grown in shade. (August)

Rh. 'Van Nes Sensation'
Light lavender tinged buds open to large flowers that are perhaps more pink than lilac, very pale and lacy. There is a whiff of fragrance. An upright plant, with a fairly neat habit, growing to 2.0m+. Stands a hot sunny site as well as any rhododendron, although the flowers will quickly fade to almost white in sun. (October)

Rh. 'Viennese Waltz'
(Syn. 'Vienna Waltz') Deep rose buds open to creamy flowers with a rose flush around the edges. A rounded, packed flower truss of up to 34. Dark, attractive leaves on a strong growing plant (1.5m). (October)

Rh. 'Virginia Richards'
An unusual rhododendron with deep pink buds opening to rosy-pink, then becoming more apricot and fading to a pale cream with an apricot flush. The flowers are held in a truss of about 10 and give a long season of bloom. A good, tidy habit and glossy, dark green leaves make this a valuable addition to the garden. (October)
