Rh. 'Idealist'
Rh. 'Idealist'
Wide-open flowers held in a truss of 10-12, pale, yellow-green in colour and with a small yellow blotch at the base. Pink in bud. Vigorous and upright, and growing to about 1.8-2.0m, 'Idealist' has glossy, round leaves with a purple petiole. Plant in a sheltered position in light shade. (October)

Rh. 'Ilam Cornubia'
Rh. 'Ilam Cornubia'
Clear red flowers in a rounded truss are carried in from late July and into August and herald the beginning of the rhododendron season. More often sold than 'Cornubia' in our plant nurseries, 'Ilam Cornubia' is widely considered to be a better plant with a finer truss of flowers and neater habit (2.0m). (August-September)

Rh. 'Ilam Orange'
Rh 'Ilam Orange'
Strongly coloured orange flowers fade to yellow (as shown here) are prolific and held in a lax truss. The glossy leaves have a red petiole. Wider than high, 'Ilam Orange' will reach about 1.5-1.8m. (October)

Rh. 'Impi'
Rh 'Impi'
'Impi' has small, frilled dark black-red flowers, one of the darkest reds of all rhododendrons, and carried on a loose truss of about 10-12. Deep red-green leaves with a red petiole and stem. A small plant with compact habit growing to about 1.0-1.2m. Really a lovely plant. (October)

Rh. 'Ivan D. Wood'
Rh. 'Ivan D. Wood'
A New Zealand hybrid bred by the late Mollie Wood of Ilam, Christchurch in the 1960's. Peachy buds open to creamy-buff coloured flowers with an orange flush, fading to a creamy-yellow flushed with rose at the edges. Leaves are light green on a reasonably vigorous plant so give it space in the border. Prefers light shade and grows to 1.4m. (October-November)

Rh. 'Janet Blair'
Rh. 'Janet Blair'
Masses of scented, frilled flowers in pale pink, carried in a rounded, open truss. Wider than tall, the bush is rather ungainly will grow to 2.0m+ and has dark green shiny leaves. Very cold hardy, with amongst the largest flowers of rhododendrons bred for cold climates. Also heat tolerant. (October)

Rh. 'Jingle Bells'
Rh. 'Jingle Bells'
Deep red coloured buds open to orange flowers (a little deeper than in the photograph, left) flushed red in the centre, and fading to yellow. Trusses of 8-10. Foliage is tinged bronzy-green when young on a dense and compact bush to about 1.2m.

Very hardy, although the buds can suffer frost damage in very cold areas, so site carefully. (October)
