An early, deep red rhododendron with waxy flowers with maroon spots in dense rounded truss of 11-15. Leaves dark green and very glossy. Vigorous upright plant growing to 2.5m and as wide. Protect from wind and not suited to very cold areas. (September) |
Rh. 'Blue Diamond'
One of the most popular 'blue' rhododendrons, violet-blue flowers are carried on an upright, dense bush that will reach 1.5m. Bronze-green on a hardy plant but can be susceptible to leaf-roller caterpillar. Can plant in full sun. (September) |
Rh. 'Blue Peter'
A popular 'blue' rhododendron with frilly flowers in pale lavender blue with a purple flare carried in a tight truss of about 15 flowers. A spreading, rather sprawly shrub growing to about 1.5m, which can suffer leave damage from insects. (October) |
Rh. 'Blue River'
Not really a 'blue' rhododendron as the prolific flowers are pale lavender and spotted in a truss of about 17. A good, rounded, neat habit to about 1.5m, although not a strong bush. (October) |
Rh. 'Bowbells'
A popular williamsianum hybrid although there are many newer and stronger bushes now available (e.g. Rh. 'Reve Rose'). Deep pink in bud, the flowers a cup-shaped and light pink in lax, hanging trusses of four to seven flowers. The lovely new foliage is red-tinged. To about 1.0m and compact, although bushes planted in shade can become drawn and scruffy. Do not plant in strong sunlight not add fertiliser as it dislikes both intensely. |

A bushy plant to 1.0m that carries a flat truss of white, cream-centred flowers edged with pink. An Australian hybrid that is suited to equivalent areas in New Zealand. (September) |
Rh. 'Bruce Bretchbill'
A sport of the popular Rh. 'Unique', Rh. 'Bruce Brecthbill' has pale pink flowers with a yellow throat, carried 10-12 to each rounded truss. A very compact bush to about 1.5m, and with attractive, rounded shiny leaves. (September) |

Deep purple flowers with a darker blotch in the throat, held in a truss of 7-15. A very hardy bush with dark green, pointed leaves. (October) |
