R. macabeanum
The very large, ribbed, deep green leaves alone, felted with silver beneath, make this rhododendron growing. The flowers, sometimes in a full flush only every second year, are a heavy, open truss of 15-20 are a deep creamy, primrose-yellow with a maroon blotch in the throat that resembles a giant cream-puff.
Hardy in most districts, R. macabeanum prefers an open woodland situation similar to its home in Northern India, and needs protection form strong winds. Eventually 10.0m+ and as wide, with an open, tree-like habit. (August-September)
