Gardening Mad
Monty Don (Bloomsbury Publishing 1998)
Many books written by celebrity TV gardeners seem unreal and more perfect than life. This book is an exception. Monty Don is, as he happily admits, 'gardening mad'. He takes us on a mad gallop through the gardening year with these reprints, drawn from his weekly column in the Observer newspaper, suffer less editing than in the original publishing.
There are discourses on battling plagues of bugs, dealing with contractors, experimenting with snow-protection and more. A gardener who clearly has his hands in the soil on a regular basis and who routinely admits that he struggles to keep everything up to date, you can laugh with him and feel he is human.
There are some gentle, and some not so gentle, fun poked at the UK gardening establishment, something it is clear Monty Don dreads becoming part of.
This book is as unique as the man himself, and if you have a sense of humour, then you will enjoy it immensely. And then you will go back to it for the solid advice and inspirational ideas scattered through it. Leave it out - there is nothing better to make you feel good at the end of a day in the garden.
