Gardens By the Sea
Barbara Seagall (Godwit, Sept. 2002)

Summer holidays or weekends by the beach, a home by the sea. It doesn't matter what category your coastal garden fits into, it's a very different set of challenges from gardening inland.

Taking the form of a walk through a number seaside gardens on different continents, the book makes it obvious that no coastal climate, soil or terrain is the same. Some of the Australian and Californian gardens offer great, relevant advice for our conditions. Other sections are gardens to dream of, with ideas that do not readily translate into a Kiwi culture or climate.

The book has an international perspective, with some spectacular gardens featured. The high standard of New Zealand gardening is clear; there are a number of photographs of local gardens. Ideas and gardens, however, know no boundaries, and the inspired styles and varied approaches can be a great resource for the coastal gardener.

A special section details ideas and 'strategies' for creating shelter, planting for shelterbelts, soil improvement, plants that survive, and working with the conditions offer good practical advice.

The photography by Jerry Harpur is superb and Barbara Seagall's writing clear. A great inspirational book for the aspiring coastal gardener, although its glossy pages make it a tad expensive!
