Foliage for the contemporary New Zealand garden
Julian Matthews (Random House, Sept. 2007)

The theme of this book is on contemporary gardens with a focus on easy care in today's busy modern world. This book shows how foliage plants are exciting and have much to offer.

This beautifully presented book by Julian Matthews, a well known leading New Zealand garden writer and former editor of the NZ Gardener, has recently entered the bookstores. This very useful reference book is not only for the experienced plants person but also for the beginner gardener.

The 114 foliage plants are not an inclusive list but as Julian Matthews states he has unashamedly chosen these plants because he likes them. The plants and the book are both bold and contemporary.

Each plant has a page of text with, on the opposite page, stunning photography by the author. There are concise clear descriptions and advice for each plant. Advice on soil types, situation and cold hardiness with ideas on plant hardiness. The emphasis is on growing plants that suit your conditions. How often do we struggle to grow a plant because we like it but it is entirely unsuited for the conditions in our garden. There are suggestions as to plant combinations and this is very helpful especially if you already have a plant doing well and are wondering what to plant with it. A slightly frustrating feature is that not all suggested suitable planting companions are among the 114 plants and so one may be forced to dash off for another reference book if unsure.

The range of plants is from small ground covers to small trees and shrubs. A range of climates and regions are covered.

This book deserves a place on your coffee table as much as in your garden library as it is easy to pick up and browse. Foliage Plants will also be of interest to photographers with the stunning photography and excellent layout.
