Classic Roses
Peter Beales (1997, Harvell Press)

Peter Beales Classic Roses was first published in 1985 and very quickly became a 'classic', referred to and used as the definitive guide on roses, particularly heritage roses. This is a updated, revised and expanded edition, a must-have for old rose aficionados. Peter Beales is one of the world's foremost authorities on old roses and this book reflects the extent of his knowledge as it covers the fascinating history and indexes over 1,000 roses.

Classic Roses is far more than a catalogue for identifying and understanding individual roses, it also discusses using roses in landscape and design schemes. Roses for poor soils, for walls, for shade and for perfume, hips and foliage are covered in individual sections.

Recommendations for the cultivation of roses, from pruning to fertilising, and planting to propagation are covered by a rosarian who is internationally respected for his knowledge and understanding of the rose.

The history of the rose, its origins and introduction to the western world, and the subsequent development of the modern rose are covered in some depth.

The 'dictionary' of roses has many. Many lovely colour photographs that will not only aid the identification of roses but will have you ordering more! The 'English' roses developed by David Austin are included in this edition. You will also find species roses, modern shrubs, floribundas and 'ground cover' roses.

If you are interested in roses, heritage roses or the more modern varieties, then Peter Beales' 'Classic Roses' is a book that you will enjoy, use often and wonder how you did without.
