Great Dixter
An innovative garden surrounding an historic, half-timbered house. Famed for its Long Border running along a terrace at the front of the house and a Topiary Lawn, Great Dixter has much more to offer. The rose garden was ripped out and replaced with a tropical garden with cannas and many flamboyant plants, and this before the current fashion for such gardens. This is the Great Dixter edge; to be at the forefront, to be original. The plantsmanship is unsurpassed and the handling of plants and colour innovative. A wonderful garden.

The double borders at Nymans

This is a garden of contrasts from the parkland, with a fascinating collection of trees (many replacements since the hurricanes of the late 1980's) to the collections of magnolia and eucryphia, some named after the garden or the Messel family, to the flambouyant double border which are blaze colour each summer. There are quiet areas and there are sometimes crowds. A lovely, special garden.

The garden created by Vita Sackville West and her husband, Harold Nicolson. From the complex and famous White Garden to the simplicity of the Moat Walk, the brilliant hues of the Purple Border to the tremendous mass of bloom and the beauty of the Rose Garden, this garden has many faces and something for every gardener. The planting is masterly and the maintenance impeccable. A jewel of a garden and one of which it would be hard to tire. It is, however, extremely popular and can be crowded despite the 'timed ticket' entrance, try to visit at less popular times (April, September & October, or on Saturdays and weekdays after 4.00pm) to really get the feel of this special garden.

Penshurst Place

An immensely historic garden surrounding an absolutely enormous house. The garden incorporates a number of styles, from severely formal, to lovely plantings through old orchards and more convential flower beds. There is a some garish flag garden planted as a Union Jack.
