In the rose display beds, visitors can gauge which roses will do well in the Auckland climate - sometimes more challenging for growing roses than visitors would believe. The garden is maintained on a low-spray programme so that roses requiring intensive spray programmes have been identified as not suitable to this region, while others that thrive bloom profusely. (Best season: November and March)
The herb garden has an attractive arbour and water feature. There are some lovely heritage roses and interesting plants in this smaller, more intimate area of the gardens. Other special collections include the salvia collection, a national reference collection, with brilliant colour in late summer and autumn.
Spring blossom, magnolias and daffodils in Blossom Valley and the magnolia collection make sure that Aucklanders don't miss the illusion of spring (frosts are rare in Auckland and winters wet and cool rather than cold).
Taking advantage of the sub-tropical climate, a new palm collection will help gardeners chose varieties for their garden in the immensely popular tropical garden style.
Hedging options are widened with the use of the native Griselinea littoralis (Broadleaf) for a hedge near the education centre. There is a large native section, incorporating many hebes, phormiums (native flax) and other cultivars that have been developed. A wide path leads through a cool section of 'bush' where native ferns and shade lovers are grown.
A 30 hectare forest remnant on the gardens northern end makes a wonderful bush walk, while the mature totora (Podocarpus totora) on the Ellerslie Flower Show site demonstrate how impressive our native plants are.
The gardens are popular, and many families can be seen enjoying the grounds, picnicking on the grass. The scene is enlivened by the sight of wedding parties trailing across the ground in full finery, as it Botanic Gardens are a popular venue of wedding photography.
Our advice: leave yourself plenty of time and take your notebook! This is not a small garden and it is full of great ideas and inspiring plants.
