From the tennis court lawn a path leads you on to cross the main axis of the garden, running from the main front of the house through to a magnificent golden gledistia surrounded by dark hedging. This axis runs from the house, through a pergola, the swimming pool and a simple, white arched bridge before ending in the walk to the gledistia. Clearly, all of this was planned and mapped out before a tree was planted, the love of trees (and of order) dominating the scene.
Encircled by deep green hedges, the paeony garden
Maturing pin-oaks in a peaceful area
To one side of the axis is an enclosed woodland, planted with maturing pin oaks (Quercus palustris) and with one of Ann's lovely borders. Another lovely, peaceful area that wil only become more so as the trees develop and the atmosphere with them. Back then to the main lawn, more borders all carefully planted by Ann for maximum effect, roses, another axis running from the house.
The old mill, beautiful with cherries
Quite as lovely in autumn, when the brilliant foliage colours of the deciduous trees impress, as in summer, Wilson's Mill is open year-round and visitors can enjoy the changing seasons.
There are many lovely plantings and areas to enjoy at Wilson's Mill, and ideas and inspiration to take home. Take care though, for you will find yourself re-organising your own garden on formal lines and longing for the space for some 'real' trees after seeing realisation of the Izards' vision.
Since his purchase of Wilson's Mill Garden, new owner Tony Williams has taken his role as custodian of this magnificent property very seriously. Tony has already completed a lot of work on the property adding his own signature to the house and gardens, while maintaining the essense of the original design. He and his landscaping team have been working hard to bring out the very best in the garden through a maintenance project which includes extensive pruning, weeding, and simplifying of the gardens across the entire property.
Recent and current projects include: Redecoration of the house's interior, Development of a new garden entranceway, Extensive upgrades on both the Birdbath and Bog gardens, and Design and construction of storyboards located throughout the garden explaining areas of interest and detailing the history of the gardens development.
