Gardens Open New South Wales


Kennerton Green Garden
A large country garden planted for a wonderful burst of colour in spring, with the white garden, the tulips and then bluebell wood being especially lovely. Formal gardens and roses in November.

Kennerton Green is gardened by Marylyn Abbott, whose 'Gardening with Light and Colour' is a wonderful book that you should read (read our review here)

Open- 10.00am to 4.00 pm daily from September 1 to 28 November; children with adults only
Closed- end November 1999 through 31 August 2000.
Entrance fee- A$5.50 adult, concession A$4.40
Facilities- WC, teas, gift shop and plants for sale; guided tours and lunches by arrangement
Directions- from Sydney and Canberra take the Hume highway to Mittagong, leave highway at Ferguson Crescent. Over a railway bridge near 'The Máltings'. Turn right into Bong Bong Road, follow (approx 1.5 kilometres) to the garden signs

Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney
At Farm Cove on Sydney Harbour, and within walking distance of the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens occupy a spectacular site. Rose garden, herb garden, tropicals, palms, succulents as well as the peace and space of a huge park in the central city.

Open- 7.00am to sunset daily; Tropical centre, Fernery & Succulent garden 10.00am to 4.00pm
Entrance fee- Free; charge for the Tropical centre
Facilities- WC, visitor centre, shop, guided walks, education centre, restuarant, cafe & teas.

Gowan Brae
A private garden in the English-style with colour co-ordinated mixed borders, croquet lawn, vegetable garden, pond and bog garden, recently planted Australian native area. Hundreds of roses in November, predominantly old-fashioned varieties, as well as a collection of Alister Clark roses and species roses. Bearded iris feature in November. 0.6 hectares (1.5 acres)

Open- 9.30am and 4.30pm between 29 September and 26 November 2000, and 9.30am and 4.30pm between 12 April and 17 April 2001; Groups by appointment only, No Dogs, Children must be accompanied, Wheelchair access
Closed- 27 November to 11 April, and 18 April to 28 September
Entrance fee- $4.00 adult, children free, $4.00 each for groups
Facilities- WC
Directions- Charlotte Street is about 2.7 kms south of Bowral off Moss Vale Road (the main road), and about 5 kms north of Moss Vale. Chevallier College is on the corner.
