Whangarei Garden Discovery, 2001

REVIEW

Story and Pictures by Lynda Stallworthy

An annual tour around Northland's gardens, the Whangarei Garden Discovery demonstrates the diversity New Zealand garden style.

From traditional to tropical and contemporary, Northland's mild climate gives gardeners scope to stretch the boundaries and develop individual and innovative gardens.

Vivienne Papich's garden is well known. Her original and unique garden style, contemporary, minimalist gardens using a different plant palette, and traditional style gardens using a mixture of subtropicals and more conventional border plants, visitors were assured of finding a instant rapport within the gardens.

Northlands warm and humid climate, with ample rainfall, poses problems for lovers of roses and traditional English garden style and plants, but there are plenty of irresistible alternatives as this picture essay demonstrates.
