Don Fleming Student Award
The Award, named in honour of leading nurseryman Don Fleming is bestowed on the overall winner of the National Student Ideas & Design Competition. Four finalists chosen from 67 entrants throughout Australia had their designs were installed at the Show. The brief was a garden that portrayed their vision of tomorrow's trend.

The Award went to Repossession by Tom Richards, possibly more an exercise in the abstract than something that most of the Show's visitors would have considered a garden. Black and white lines representing tarmac and roading with the green mounds and grass of 'nature's revenge' reclaiming some of the surface.

Off the Rack by Haley Irvine featured dozens of red planter boxes, a mobile, 'take it with you' garden that that took account of the smaller space we have today for gardening. Sonia Van Dorssen's A Garden Mosaic used abstract patterns and an avenue of trees. The Oxygen Movement by Elke Haege incorporated a canal and water falling gently from behind a screen of trees, a lovely idea for a simple but striking, peaceful inner city garden.

Victorian School Garden Awards
An impressive collection of pumpkins, one 134kg, and many artfully decorated turned out to have been grown by school children. A wonderful display. The letters and notes by the children were clear evidence of the fun of gardening.

Floral Planting Display
The Oasis Horticulture floral display was indeed, very much in your face as the organisers had promised. A great, spiralling, scrolling planting in red and yellow with touches of blue and white and fluttering banners caught the eye.

Art and Sculpture
The sculpture garden was full of interesting pieces and the Royal Exhibition Halls had exhibitions of art works, the aesthetic was indeed well served at the Show.

Garden Centre Circle
The garden village area had displays by seven nurseries and demonstrated the diversity and ideas that your local garden centres can offer.

Olinda Garden Centre (+61 (0)3 9751 2422) had a wonderful display garden with plants to make your spade itch. Bronzy ornaments complemented the autumn colours of foliage and glass crystals hung from branches.

Poyntons of Essendon (+61 (0)3 9337 8111) showed a conservatory crammed full of goodies behind a hedge of Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'.

Outdoor Gardens and Retail
Shopping is a major activity at the Show, and visitors did not want for opportunity or variety.

There was an amazing array of bulbs, plants, tools and accessories on sale, and stunning displays of plants and accessories to tempt us all. Outdoor retail displays covered the gamut of gardening and horticultural activity.
