The large country and smaller city gardens impressed with the mass of roses, delphiniums, clematis and iris, with arbours and pergolas, sweeping lawns, lakes and majestic trees. There was a clear structure and good design in most of the gardens, serving to unify both planting and garden. These are gardeners who did not need to listen to Neil Ross' excellent talk on 'Heart and Soul' in the garden, these are gardeners knew how to create a beautiful space and to enhance it.

The hard work of these passionate gardeners was evident, not only in their lovely, immaculate gardens, but in their enthusiastic welcome and knowledge. And in the corners of their gardens you could see the shade houses and propagating areas where the masses of perennials, clematis and bulbs were multiplied to make those amazing displays. If you were lucky, there were plants for sale.

And thus to the Market in Seymour Square, the wonderful assembly of 140 varied and fascinating stalls on the final day: a veritable treasure trove of plants and gardening paraphernalia, plus a decent coffee. The range of goods and the chance to see and buy proved irresistible to most Hunter's Garden Marlborough visitors. Certainly our fellow participants stood out from the crowd on the journey home as they carried their new treasures!
For a weekend of inspiring gardens, great fun with other gardeners and just sheer enjoyment of one of New Zealand's most beautiful and productive regions, Hunter's Garden Marlborough is hard to beat. |
