The ASB Discovery Marquee

The biggest gardening event in the New Zealand calendar, the Ellerslie Flower Show kicked off on 22 November. Higher standards and a showcase for design skiils, the display gardens and commercial exhibits will give loads of ideas and inspiration to many thousands of visitors.

Early beginnings....

But the key exhibit is the ASB Discovery Marquee.

The Discovery marquee: a journey through time demonstrating the evolution of New Zealand's unique flora.

Entering through the mists of time the visitor finds the sulphurous beginnings of New Zealand, and reaches the 'Pink and White' terraces and boiling mud pools. You are surrounded by huge toadstools, fat red fungi and gigantic copper insects. Primitive plant forms (cycads and ferns).

Following the path of evolution, you enter damp and dark Podocarp forests formed in the Jurassic period. The rich and luxuriant vegetation takes you through a rocky gorge complete with a waterfall and on to coastal rainforest of broadleaved trees, ferns and palms. In total contrast, you emerge from the forest to a modern motorway underpass complete with buttressed walls and street planting, contrasting the harsh contemporary world with lush pre-historic forests.

Well done, Ellerslie, the Discovery Marquee is a truly wonderful experience that is best absorbed and appreciated slowly- so we earnestly hope that the stewards don't persist in forcing everyone through this wonderful and unique display at such a smart pace!
