Contact details, Discovery Marquee
Review by Lynda Stallworthy and Helen Williams |
Despite a rather damp beginning, the biggest gardening event in the New Zealand calendar, the Ellerslie Flower Show lived up to expectations with bigger and even higher standard of displays than last year. There is a special, Pacific feel to Ellerslie: in the plantings, sculpture and structures. |
A very New Zealand feel to the Show

|
This year's show sees a new layout, with more catering and facilities for visitors, and there lots of helpful staff to guide you. There is also a new emphasis on sculpture, linking this to our Pacific origins and the wider world. The gardens emphasise our Pacific origin, new and innovative ways to use native plants in your garden abound.
The Discovery Marquee will take you on a journey through time, tracing the evolution of our very special New Zealand flora and ending with a startling contrast of modern life.

The 'Prof', friendly as ever |
Build a Better Earth, the Rotary Garden
The eastern influence was clear in this garden, with the use of screens and planting giving a calm, modern garden, which reinforced the sponsors theme of 'building a better earth'. Designed by Amy Hawke and Morgan Mead, the garden won a Bronze award. |

Each year a notable personality is the subject of a light-hearted display. Ellerslie 2000's personality is Professor Walker, resplendent with all his vegetables, tomatoes, beans and more (including some rather lovely aubergines!)
This year's show sees a new layout, with more catering and facilities for visitors, increasing the enjoyment of a day at Ellerslie. There are several new innovations, including a new emphasis on sculpture. The remarkable ASB Discovery Marquee will take you on a journey through time, tracing the evolution of our very special New Zealand flora and ending with a startling contrast to modern life. |
Palmer's Metro Garden
A striking garden from Palmer's, the Metro Garden combined bright colours and modern design. A wonderful fish sculpture gave the garden the finished touch. |
