Les Journees des Plantes de Courson, May 2001
Previous Page

The garden ornaments were especially covetable, statues, arbours, even a miniature arched bridge crossing a pond. Living willow structures included a chair, an arbour and more.

Some very stylish garden furniture was available - tables and chairs, swing seats, arbours - all temptingly displayed. As for garden accessories, ornaments in every imaginable material and style are available. Those with the space and enthusiasm could buy a greenhouse, a demonstration of hives and beekeeping from a seller of honey and wax products fascinated many visitors young and old. Lavender, preserves and confitures abounded.

A number of paysagiste, or garden designers, had displays and several organisations promoting the lovely parks and gardens in other regions of France had stands.

A plant clinic to help those with growing problems dispenses advice.

Having Fun and Suriving It All
A range of food is available from a sit-down restaurant with full service to a sandwich, panini bar with tables available for casual dining. There did, in comparison with last year, seem to be a shortage of tables. It was possible to picnic in the grounds of the chateau and under the wonderful trees near the show.

A plant creche solved the problem of 'parking' all those lovely new plant acquisitions while you continue to scout for more, and then the charming couriers to help you get your booty to your car at the end of the day.

The locals come with their fold-up wheelbarrows (or improvise with a child's push chair) to carry their purchases back to their cars, and everyone, from near and far, departs laden with plants, tools and souvenirs.

We had lots of fun talking to the exhibitors, the friendly staff from Courson itself and our fellow visitors. One chap proudly showed us his new acquisition, a very large plant of Rosa 'Sherwood', that he was taking home on the RER to his garden. Others had smaller purchases!

Truly a great experience. A wonderful, very French garden festival that left us marvelling at the differences an similarities in plant fashions, styles and the love of gardening. As last year, the only thing missing from this very gallic affair were the little dogs that one encounters all over France.
