Chic Gardens contd
Visual Retreat
(Silver)
Wynniatt-Husey Clarke developed a simple but strong courtyard style garden. A water spout in a deep marron rendered wall flowed inot the central area of the garden. A steel mesh grid suspended over the pool made a seating area.

Planting to one side was Jaquemontii birches, the white trunks contrasting with the lush green hosta foliage beneath.

Opposite a flowery border contained an informal, semi-wild planting that was as complex as it appeared simple. Alliums, heuchera, astrantia, dicentra, euphorbia, Iris chrysographes, black pansies, Stipa gigantea, foxgloves, knautia and more were used to create a light and airy feel.

A strong design, beautifully executed.

About Now
(Bronze)
By About Gardens, this was one garden that was let down in the execution, although the extent of the bright red plastic used for walkways and elsewhere made it tough for plants to compete - or even be noticed.

Clashing red plastic and deep red-leaved maples, this was not a garden for relaxation but one that would have you wide awake, all the time. This was not a garden for a hangover, rather one for those who love to be constantly stimulated!

The 'prairie' planting was sparse and looked bitsy, despite some good choices such as rogersias, melianthus, carex and the inevitable heucheras.

The Memo Garden
(Bronze)
Visitors were fascinated with the text etched into a glass waterfall in Milton / Jago's modern courtyard.

Matching grassy hummocks flanked a central pool fed from a stone channel, running between plantings of alliums, orange geum, pink verbascums.

A wonderful purple-leaved maple stood to one side, giving scale to the garden. Against the sidewalls (rendered) were shade plantings of hostas and phormiums.

Flow Glow
(Bronze)
Surprise Gardeners created a garden incontrasts . A rustic gabion (wire encased rock wall) to one side sprouted ferns and moist plantings while plastic furniture, including a candy pink table, took centre stage and a slim, modern nymph stood sentinel opposite.

Planting was bright - magenta geraniums and gladioli, pink daisies and orange poppies and trollius cohabited cheerfully. Even the tree was bold- Gleditsia 'Sunburst'.
